On June 5th, 2019 SDSU Georgia hosted the first Capstone/Senior Design Project Showcase in Georgia. All graduating students at SDSU must complete the Capstone Project course, which takes them through the whole process of designing a product from ideation to production. At the Showcase, seniors presented the final products they produced over two-semesters, during which they worked in tandem with faculty mentors.
The event, which brought together representatives from MCC, MCA, and the US Embassy, in addition to our PPPF donors and public and private partners, was a big success. SDSU Department Chairs came from San Diego to attend the event and introduce the concept of the Capstone Project.
The student projects, described below, were exhibited and presented during the Showcase. They were judged by a panel of seven representatives from different sectors and two projects took home prizes: Silver Harmony and Gesture Controlled Mixed Reality.
2019 Capstone and Senior Design Projects
Project Name: Drumma
Team Members: Giorgi Kviria, David Janelidze
This project demonstrates a musical instrument that combines drums, electronic music, visual effects with appropriate software and hardware. The project is intended for the audience interested in listening and producing music. It may be used for local parties as well as big clubs and concerts. Drumma is a PC controlled instrument having 8 drums with music visualizer boxes, which produces sound chosen by the user. The software gives the performer an ability to play background loop music, until kicking the drum. In order to make drum playing the sample user needs to kick drumstick to the drum pad, however drum sensor is able to detect even touching it by hand. Drum pads are installed on the visualizer boxes, which is also programmed in according to the manner of music and the kick.
Project Name: El-Menu

The aim of this project was to design a compact and convenient device for ordering at bars or restaurants. This device will ease and fasten the ordering process for customers as well as for the staff members. After some research and discussion within the group, the main parts for the device were decided to be the touch screen by Nextion and microcontroller with WiFi - ESP32. Briefly, the touch screen with its own software is used to create the menu interface. However, the actions, e.g. button pressing for order, are controlled by the microcontroller. It uses the UART protocol and the Nextion library slightly modified for the project. Orders are sent using the WiFi module to the local database. From there they are displayed to the local website of the restaurant on the main screen. As an addition, the device has buttons displayed for calling the waiter and requesting the bill. The messages will also appear on the website and will be handled by the staff. The device has a simple name - "El-Menu".
Project Name: Gesture Controlled Mixed Reality

The project aims to make mixed reality affordable and accessible to everyday users by creating a single camera gesture detection-based Internet of Things control system. Utilizing the latest achievements in machine learning, such as Deep Neural Network models for object detection, and gesture classification the system will provide a comparable experience to dedicated devices with multiple camera feeds using a smartphone.
Project Name: PulseMech
Team Members: Mariam Arabidze, Davit Bakuridze, Nino Grigalashvili, Ketevani Kvirikashvili, Mariam Mikava
Our group has developed a medical Device named “PulseMech” which measures heart bit rate and oxygen level in blood constantly. “PulseMech” includes a software application for storing information in the database, revealing data and GSM module for alarm system in order to send alert SMS or call to the specific trusted person, family member, friend or emergency in the critical cases. This alarm system will be especially useful during sleeping time because “PulseMech” works as a control system of heart rate and oxygen level in blood and can detect problems which could be very difficult, almost impossible, for a person to find out critical condition during sleeping.
Small clamp-like device placed on the finger is used while pulse oximetry reading. We use module which consists of optical receiver and transmitter sensors and when light passes through the blood in the finger, oxygen saturation level and pulse rate is measured. The data is sent to the application constantly using WiFi module and user can see how the pulse and oxygen level changes throughout the time. Saving data is helpful not only for the patients but for doctors to track medical conditions in high risk cases.
The aim of our project is to reduce fatal statistics by determining the danger before several hours till the possible heart or brain dysfunction.
Project Name: Signal Generator

In SDSU labs we, students are given indeed great equipment to play with. Starting from simple power supply finished with function generator. The quality and performance of the equipment is great, yet the price is also high. For an amateur at engineering it will be near impossible to purchase such luxurious equipment. Based on that fact, our team decided to create Function generator which would be accessible for all who take interest in electric engineering. Out function generator can output 1MHZ signal, while price of a unit is 50$.
Project Name: Silver Harmony
Team Members: Vakhtang Donadze, Lana Gaspariani, Mikheil Chkheidze, Anna Lomashvili, Saba Kakabadze
All kinds of sounds are heard every moment in our daily life, but it is the tesla coil that preserves the qualities of the music we hear and at the same time works in a completely different manner from the hardware known to broad public. Representing input with the sufficient power is not limited to auditory, but also uncommon visual effect. Making melodies more unique is facilitated with numerous filters, in our case being adjusted gradually, thus providing flexibility to composer. The input can be controlled and expressed by a single note or the chord, which makes the adjusted formulation stand out. Making the generated output even more complex is accomplished by the auto-accompaniment that adds polyphonic background to the initial wave and can potentially make the input sound like any genre we decide on beforehand. As a bonus whatever the piece, we can continue it for several bars, thus hinting composer on multiple ways to further explore.
Project Name: Theremin with DSP Audio Effects
Team Members: Mikheil Kushashvili, Erekle Jmukhadze, Emin Nuryev, Irakli Bajelidze, Sopo Gvenetadze
We have built the musical instrument Theremin, with DSP audio effects. Theremin is an instrument in which sound is controlled by the performer with his/her movement of hand towards and away of the pitch and volume antenna, not touching the instrument at all. The output signal will be analyzed and processed by the FPGA for different effects, which will be controlled by the performer.
Project Name: TSEOORI
Team Members: Nika Pruidze, Sandro Iosava
The project of our group is about measuring the CO2 in the room. After the measurement process, the data should is transferred to RaspberryPi server via IOT(Internet of Things), using MQTT protocol. 12V battery is used to power CO2 sensor measures carbon dioxide in the ear and transfers relevant voltages to the analog-to-digital converter and then, nodeMCU receives the voltages. But, CO2 sensor works at 24V, so 12V to 24V converter is used. On the other hand, RaspberryPi server is set up at one of our group members home. When NodeMCU receives the data, it sends it periodically to the router at home and the router, on its own, sends it to the RasberryPi server using port-forwarding. Finally, when the data is stored at the SQL server on RP, program “Grafana” is used, which can be integrated with SQL server and display the data as graphs.
Project Name: Ultrasonic Generator

Project Overview: This project aims to use the cutting edge technology for scaring the dogs, on the level so it’s not harmful to anyone’s health. For this purpose, we created Ultrasonic Generator - the technology that scares dogs and other animals. Ultrasonic Generator is designed for implementation in the yards. Dogs, mice, bats and other animals can hear sounds with frequencies up to 40, 0000 Hz. The circuit is designed specifically for producing sounds above human limit, so it scares only animals. By applying other technology such as Raspberry pi3, Grove pi+, and Movidius, circuit automatically operates. With Raspberry pi3 and Movidius, we use image detection algorithms to run the circuit when the dog is nearby. After dog is detected, the speaker generates waves and meanwhile, iOS application retrieves the data about the detected object, so the user can have the data remotely in his mobile device 24/7.
